The Virginia Railroad began pushing into the hills and hollows of West Virginia in the late 1800′s. By the time the town was incorporated in 1912, coal was being shipped from places like Slab Fork, McAlpin and Winding Gulf. Sophia became a hub for the coal mining towns.
As the Passenger train ran twice a day, Sophia’s retail stores and movie theater were a very popular place for the miners and their families!
